Thesis

The Rise and Perseverance of Cooke Aquaculture, the Public Outcry against Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture, and the Government’s Legislation Response

This thesis examines the Cooke Aquaculture net pen collapse in the Puget Sound. Wild salmon are moderately to critically endangered, leading to the rise of salmon aquaculture. Salmon Aquaculture helps supply the high demand for salmon in the American diet. The thesis takes its reader on a journey learning about the salmon farming industry, the different subspecies of salmon, the aquaculture process, the Cooke net pen collapse, the political and public response to it, and the changes Cooke implemented to their aquaculture techniques. Daniel’s thesis helped connect his passion for fishing, business, and agriculture, reflected in his chosen courses and area of concentration.
